Last Wednesday night, I had the privilege of attending the annual State of the Schools celebration hosted by the Glendale Educational Foundation (GEF) at the Glendale Community College auditorium. It wasn’t just another event—it was a moving reminder of how deeply our community values education and those who dedicate their lives to it.

Kicking Things Off with Music and History

The evening started on a high note—literally. The talented Hoover High School Jazz Band filled the patio with music during the welcome reception. Inside, the event was hosted by the always-entertaining Kris Kohlmeier, a retired GUSD educator, who brought warmth, humor, and even some fun trivia about our local schools.

What I Learned from Our Educational Leaders

GEF Executive Director Bethany Harrington welcomed us, followed by Glendale College President Dr. Ryan Cornner. What stuck with me most from Dr. Cornner’s remarks was the emphasis on partnerships—how the growing connection between the college and GUSD is leading to real, measurable outcomes for students.

GEF Board President Manuel Magpapian and GUSD Board President Ingrid Gunnell also spoke with passion about their shared mission—to keep pushing the bar higher for public education in Glendale.

Celebrating Our Local Heroes in Education

The highlight of the evening was seeing Maestra Marylou Escobar from Muir Elementary named Teacher of the Year. As a Spanish Dual Language Immersion teacher, her work is nothing short of transformative. Also recognized was Amanda Price, who was awarded Classified Employee of the Year for her outstanding dedication and behind-the-scenes work that keeps our schools running smoothly.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Darneika Watson, GUSD Superintendent, shared a powerful presentation that left me hopeful. She spotlighted student success, new academic programs, more arts education, and serious investments in wellness and upgraded facilities. What truly resonated with me was her gratitude to all the community partners who make these efforts possible.

Ending with Spirit and Talent

The evening wrapped up with electric performances that reminded us who this is all really for—the students. Glendale High’s dance team lit up the stage with energy and style, while Crescenta Valley High School’s Marching Band closed the night with heart-pounding pride.

As someone who cares deeply about education and community, this event reminded me why supporting our educational foundations is more important than ever.
